A Mother's Love and Determination

By: Jenny Hanks

At just one year and seven months old, Gabrielle has already faced significant health challenges. His mother, Dalvani Maria Silva, shared the heartbreaking story of how her son, once healthy, experienced a severe asthmatic crisis at nine months old that led to his current condition.

After being rushed to the hospital, Gabrielle had to be intubated, and his heart stopped for six minutes due to complications, including pneumonia and a blood infection. The event left him with nerve damage, and doctors said that he may never walk again.

Gabrielle now requires constant care, and Dalvani devotes herself to his well-being. Living in a remote area called Campina, surrounded by sugarcane fields, life is far from easy. The family doesn’t have running water in their home and faces difficulties accessing basic necessities. Despite these challenges, Dalvani and her husband, a taxi driver, strive to provide the best care for their son. Gabrielle’s grandmother, Valnilda, plays a crucial role, helping the family manage day-to-day tasks and caring for Gabrielle while his parents work.

For transportation to therapy and doctor appointments, the family relies on a motorcycle and public buses. Dalvani often has to carry Gabrielle on the motorcycle, sitting sideways while holding him tightly. This makes trips to therapy, which can be long and arduous, particularly challenging.

Receiving a new wheelchair has been a significant relief for the family. Dalvani expressed her deep gratitude, noting how much easier it will be to take Gabrielle out of the house and to therapy. The new chair will also allow him to sit up comfortably. For a child who spends most of his time at home, this new wheelchair represents not just mobility but a better quality of life.
